Kim Bum-Soo, CEO of OnTheIT

SEOUL, KOREA — OnTheIT is going all-out to take the software "Hallyu" fever to Japan with its product KnowledgePlus, a top manager of the integrated business innovation solution company said. In an interview with Korea IT Times, OnTheIT's CEO Kim Bum-soo said, “KnowledgePlus is a pure Web-based corporate knowledge portal package software boasting of its high practical use. It is a core IT infrastructure software, designed to maximize an organization’s business ability by offering a base integrated with a variety of solutions.”

Noting that KnowledgePlus is a perfect package product, he said, “We will establish a marketing strategy by offering a package portal without customizing, and sell our products through various channels.

“Our company has the ambitious vision to lead the software ‘hallyu’ fever in Japan with KnowledgePlus, moving away from the present satisfaction in keeping a leading position in the domestic enterprise knowledge portal (EKP) market,” said the top manager.

Bottlenecks in advancing into overseas markets

Most Korean enterprises hoping to enter into overseas markets are facing difficulties with integrating their products into overseas systems or in replacing their systems with non-domestic software, he said.

“Accordingly, they should place first priority on integrating their products with local goods and services or developing competitive replacement products," said Kim.

Commenting that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are hesitant to build such a system because of the high expense, he said, “SMEs also should concentrate their efforts on simplifying or packaging their products to enable the construction of the system at low cost.”

OnTheIT, established in 1999, is building a variety of business systems based on knowledge-based packages for manufacturing, financing, service industries, information technology, and public fields. With its own technology, OnTheIT is offering such solutions as KMS, EKP, EDMS, CSS, Smart Office Solutions, and BPM.

“Along with this, our company is developing and supplying Enterprise Intelligence Portal (EIP) Packages covering all life cycles of knowledge, ranging from consulting to system construction and change management,” the CEO explained.

"The integrated business innovation solution KnowledgePlus is a pure Web-based EIP package software,” he stressed, adding that OnTheIT is realizing the Web 2.0-based technology value and leading integrated communication, convergence, and open innovation.

SmartWorks of OnTheIT

SmartWorks is a smart office solution developed by OnTheIT that enables company staff to effectively carry out their individual business without time and space restriction by creating workspace by business unit.

“In a nutshell, SmartWorks is an optimal smart office solution suitable for a smart work environment and a core IT infrastructure to maximize business productivity,” said the CEO.

Asked about achievements in the global market and its overseas business plan, CEO Kim said, “In the Japanese market, we have attained remarkable business results, including a knowledge portal project for a leading company in the global manufacturing sector in Japan, development of an information sharing portal for academic franchise companies, sales of ERP products for SMEs, and a supply of bottlenecks and distribution management portals for cosmetics makers and sellers.”

Stressing that OnTheIT concluded a memorandum of understanding (MOU) or a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) with nine Japanese companies, he said, “Some 30 additional Japanese firms are now considering to purchase our products after establishing a solution appraisal system of OnTheIT.”

He said with confidence that OnTheIT possesses limitless possibility, differentiated technology power and a strong global competitiveness in realizing Web 2.0, green IT, and convergence through knowledge-based packages.

“Based on domestically-recognized technology and solutions, we plan to advance into the Japanese market successfully and grow to be a global software company by gaining a firm foothold in the Japanese market,” said Kim.

Secret of developing successful software products

Asked to comment on the secret of developing successful products in the Korean software market, he said, “For the

time in the initial stage of the knowledge management system (KMS) market, which was built centered on system integration (SI), we applied the concept of package and enterprise knowledge portal (EKP), leading the domestic knowledge-based solution market.

Mentioning that OnTheIT established the definition of a new type of knowledge management by building KMS for goal and achievement management paradigms, Kim said, “Our company is now offering solutions possessing powerful scalability linked with business process, including proposal and task management and Enterprise 2.0."

“We can say that the competitiveness of OnTheIT comes from outstanding technology power accumulated in the process of endless R&D projects and strategy focusing on a single field. We are approaching customers with a business mind, considering functions necessary for customers, and pursuing a thorough package with flexible concepts that can make access to any system. Through a knowledge-based package, we are exerting all-out efforts to realize the Web 2.0, UC and convergence services,” he noted.

Globally-recognized knowledge management company

OnTheIT, which introduced KnowledgePlus 0.1 to the market in 2000, is now presenting the pure Web-based KnowledgePlus 5 solution through a series of persistent product upgrades.

The company is sparing no efforts for R&D projects to offer stable solutions to customers reflecting the latest technology and help customers have an optimized knowledge management infrastructure.

“By coping with customers’ various needs swiftly and exactly, we can differentiate OnTheIT from other KMS companies. It is our merit,” said Kim.

Touching on the management philosophy of OnTheIT, the CEO said, “We are adopting Knowledge Management Strategy, Planning & Implementation Methodology (K-SPIM) to grasp customers’ core ability and offer suitable strategies, operational methods and changing management services, beyond simple system design,” he stressed.

Along with this, OnTheIT is offering customers powerful scalability through collaborations, WIKI, Blogs, consultation “doumi (helper)” and electronic document management systems (EDMS).

“Our company is a knowledge management (KM) leader covering all areas of next-generation knowledge management with the Web 2.0-based collaboration solution SmartWorks and knowledge management advanced solution WiseSpring,” he said.

At present, some 200 sites of government agencies, state-run companies and large enterprises, including the Ministry of Environment, Korail, Hyundai Kia Motors, POSCO Construction, Kookmin Bank, and SK Telecom are using KnowledgePlus.
