SEOUL, KOREA – Samsung Electronics has allowed people to catch a glimpse of the future of smartphones- a twisty and bendy smartphone based on three jointed displays. When its wing-like screen unfolds, the smartphone can fold out into an almost tablet-sized device while it is just a small hand-held smartphone with its large screen folded.
Online publication All Things D reported that Samsung strategy chief Young Sohn demonstrated the concept smartphone at the start of the MobileBeat conference 2013, held in San Francisco on July 10.
In a demo video shown at the MobileBeat conference 2013, Samsung unveiled the concept smartphone that can turn into a smart pad.
In the one-minute-long video, the palm-size smart pad, equipped with three connected displays, appears. It has two side flaps that fold out to expand the phone's operable size. And the concept phone's reflective display can change its RGB color through the use of embedded photonic crystals. The color of the display represents different modes the phone can be in.
The video, shown off by Samsung strategy chief Young Sohn at the MobileBeat conference, indicates that Samsung thinks health monitoring will be a big thing in the future. In the video, a disposable RFID chip in the form of a wearable patch is shown sending the vital health signs of the wearer to the new phone. The data can be directly forwarded to the wearer’s physician. The video states that an "electromagnetic wave generator and detector are integrated in the patch sensor."

삼성전자가 3개 디스플레이가 연결돼 접었다 펼 수 있는 차세대 스마트폰 시제품을 공개했다. 가운데 화면을 중심으로 양쪽 화면이 뒤로 접혀지는 형태다. 날개 모양 화면을 펼치면 스마트패드처럼 쓰고 화면을 뒤로 접으면 한 손에 쥐기 편한 크기의 스마트폰으로 변한다.
올싱스디는 10일 미국 샌프란시스코에서 열린 `모바일비트2013 콘퍼런스`에서 손영권 삼성 전략혁신센터(SSIC) 사장이 발표한 차세대 스마트폰 컨셉트 동영상을 소개했다.
약 1분 길이의 영상에는 손바닥 전체를 가릴 만한 크기의 작은 스마트패드가 등장한다. 이 제품은 화면이 1 대 2 대 1 비율로 구성된다. 양쪽 날개 형태로 달린 화면을 뒤로 접으면 손안에 쏙 들어오는 스마트폰으로 변한다. 이 제품은 `포토닉 크리스털 액추에이터(photonic crystal Actuator)` 기술을 활용해 화면 색깔이 다채롭게 변한다.
삼성전자는 이 제품의 헬스케어 기능을 강조했다. 스마트폰에서 투명한 일회용 센서를 꺼내 손목에 붙인다. 고통이 없는 패치형 센서에 달린 나노 와이어는 신체 상태를 파악하고 스마트폰에 정보를 전송한다. 이 정보는 바로 주치의에게 보내지고 진료 일정이 잡힌다.
손영권 사장은 “헬스케어 분야가 혁신을 이끌 핵심 분야”라고 말했다. 삼성전자는 바이오와 헬스케어를 신성장동력으로 육성 중이다. 손 사장은 “컴퓨팅 기술이 안경이나 의류 등 다양한 분야에 접목돼 시장이 확대될 것”이라고 전망했다.
삼성 전략혁신센터는 실리콘밸리 DNA를 삼성에 접목하는 역할을 한다. 미국 현지 유망 스타트업 인수합병 하는 등 혁신 R&D 전진기지다.
