Samsung C&T regained its No. 1 position in construction capabilities after nine years. In a 2014 construction ability evaluation conducted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transportation on all contractors, Samsung C&T was ranked at the top with the assessment amount of 13,120.8 billion won. This is largely due to the company's effort to win large-scale overseas orders such as the Roy Hill iron ore mining project (Australia) and Al-Kuraya power plant project (Saudi Arabia).

 

Hyundai Engineering & Construction, the leader for the past five years, slid to the second place with the assessment volume of 12,566.6 billion won. It was then followed by POSCO Engineering & Construction (9,002.2 billion won) that gained two notches from the previous year. Meanwhile, Daewoo Engineering & Construction moved down to fifth place from third last year at 7,490.1 billion won. Daelim Industrial (4th) and GS Engineering & Construction remained at their position as before.

 

Thanks to a merger with Hyundai Amco, Hyundai Engineering could enter within the top-ten list for the first time. Other mid-sized construction contractors such as Hoban Construction (15th), booyoung Corp. (16th), and Dongwon Development (41st) gained their ranks by a large margin. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transportation, in partnership with the Construction Association of Korea, evaluates the nation's all construction contractors based on their past year performance, financial standing, and credit rating and publishes the results at the end of July every year.
