SEOUL, KOREA - The race not to finish last is heating up in Korea’s automobile market. Renault Samsung, which sold 60,000 cars last year, was at the bottom of the sales list.Renault Samsung sold 59,000 units in 2012, slightly higher than Ssangyong Motor’s 47,700 units. It, however, was overtaken by Ssangyong last year.

When Renault Samsung held its new year’s kick-off meeting this year, it set its goal at achieving No. 3 spot this year.To catch up with the current No. 3 player GM Korea, Renault Samsung needs to achieve a 2.5-fold growth in sales.

Renault Samsung’s vice president Park Dong-Hoon is now on the front line. When he served as the president of Volkswagen Korea, he has the experience of placing it at the top in the import car industry. He dramatically increased the sales of Volkswagen Korea up to 18,395 units in 2012 from 1,635 units in 2005.

Renault Samsung’s CEO Francois Provost is focusing on introducing a string of new models for the Korean market. Following the releasing of SUV QM3 and QM5 last year, Renault Samsung also rolled out SM5 Diesel and SM7 Nova this year.
