Last year, Korea’s mineral water market sales reached 600 billion KRW, double from 340 billion KRW in 2009, showing a fierce competition among the manufacturers.

In particular, Baeksansoo, Nongshim’s bottled water became sensational since it has become the second highest brand in two years after its launching.

Baeksansoo has its Heaven Lake as a source of water, so it has passed through basaltic layers and floatstones to an average thickness of hundred meters. While it has run inside of Mt. Baekdu, it cannot but contain various silica ingredients and minerals which give us health benefits, and then it finally soars up in Naeducheon, the very source of Baeksansoo.

Naeducheon does not mean river or stream, but it means spring with the Chinese letter of cheon(泉). In other words, it means the heart of mother, since it is not running river but welling spring, so you can call it Mt. Baekdu’s breast. Many Chinese companies are indulged in securing water sources by burying pipes. In contrast, Nongshim has just poured Naeducheon’s water into a bottle as it is.

The taste of Naeducheon’s water is the fruit of Mt. Baekdu’s nature and time. Mt. Baekdu is half as high as Mt. Han-la, and the territory is also a hundred times larger than that. Furthermore, a lava bed of basaltic layers was made around it by volcanic activities between the third and forth Cenozoic periods. On top of that, pyroclastic materials are piled up as clay, showing a unique geological structure. The size of cracks between basaltic layers is so various that reservoir is spacious and penetration is unrivaled. It is also hard to find a better filtering because the water made of rainwater and snow in Mt. Baekdu’s Heaven Lake run along the volcano’s bedrock. Through filtering, the water contains vital minerals. This is the reason why Mt. Baekdu is reckoned as one of the world’s best water sources including the Alps in Europe and the Caucasus Mountains in Russia.

Another merit of Baeksansoo is its purity. The surface of Mt. Baekdu is consisted of impermeability layers which stemming the flow of pollutants from outside.

“Nongshim prevents any possible inflow of pollutants without destroying virgin forest in Mt. Baekdu by linking 3.7 km-long pipes from Naeducheon,” said an official of Nongshim.

The merit of Baeksansoo lies in its large quantity of reservoir. About 500,000 ton/day of water has been flowed in Mt. Baekdu’s Heaven Lake, and 25,000 ton/day of spring water has stemmed from Naeducheon. Mineral water in general which has the water source in underground water is often accused of the depletion of water source as well as environmental pollution around forebay.

“The water source of Baeksansoo can have minerals good for our health when it is boiled to a temperature of 60 to 90 degrees Celsius around magma, according to a German research,” said Dr. Lim Seung-tae, head of Korea Water Institute, “The water of Naeducheon is unprecedented natural volcano bedrock water which keeps the temperature of 6 to 7 degrees Celsius all year round.”

According to the research of Prof. Shin Ho-sang at the kongju national university, released in March, Baeksansoo received the highest score among the brands in Korea’s large retailer shops in regards to the ratio of Mg/Ca and the content of silica. It is widely known that silica is good for preventing dementia.

Marking the 50th anniversary of its establishment, Nongshim aims to leap forward to become a global food company by diversifying its business with Baeksansoo as the center. Nongshim has a plan to make Baeksansoo, its bottled water another Nongshim’s flagship, second to Shin Ramyun, which will be a new driving force to target the Chinese market.

“The new factory of Baeksansoo will be the forward base of Nongshim which will drive the growth for the next century, “said Park Jun, Nongshim’s President&CEO, “Under the circumstances that major global companies push ahead with developing the water source of Mt. Baekdu, the new factory will be the stepping stone for Nongshim in the cut-throat global market.”
