President Park Geun-hye is scheduled to meet with United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in the afternoon on May 20 at Cheong Wa Dae. Secretary-General Ban will be visiting Korea to attend the World Education Forum to be held May 19-22 in Incheon.
The meeting this time is expected to serve as an opportunity for the two leaders to revisit the significance of Korea-UN cooperative relations in the year marking the 70th anniversary of Korea’s liberation and the founding of the United Nations. The two leaders are also anticipated to discuss a variety of measures to strengthen future cooperation.
In addition, their discussions will focus on issues of mutual interest, including the situation on the Korean Peninsula and the North Korean nuclear and missile problem, as well as key issues of the United Nations for this year, including a post-2015 development agenda and a post-2020 climate change regime formation.
It will be Secretary-General Ban’s second visit to Korea since President Park took office, the first being in August 2013. President Park held official meetings with Secretary-General Ban in May 2013 when she visited New York, in September 2013 when she attended the G20 Summit in St. Petersburg and in September 2014 when she attended the UN General Assembly.
In addition, the two leaders have held unofficial meetings on several occasions, especially on the sidelines of multilateral summits, including the APEC Summit in Bali in October 2013 and East Asia Summit in Naypyidaw, Myanmar, in November 2014.
