Lawmakers are pushing ahead with the bills to shift the calculation system of car tax from the current engine displacement to vehicle prices.
Shim Jae-chul, a lawmaker of the ruling Saenuri Party, said, "The government is imposing car taxes based on engine displacement under the current law."
"However, with the development of technology, car owners with lower engine displacement, higher performance and higher price pay less tax than drivers with low-priced and performance cars," he added.
Accordingly, lawmakers are planning to efficiently overhaul the tax system so that people with high priced cars can pay more tax.
Under the current tax system, car owners with less than 1,000cc engine capacity pay 80 won. And, drivers with less than 1,600cc cars spend 140 won and with more than 1,600 pay 200 won.
According to Shin, although the basic price of Benz C 200(1991cc) and Hyundai's Sonata 2.0(1999cc) are 48 million won and 23 million won each, their tax prices are similar at 398,000 won.
