It is expected that the competition between the two companies, Samsung and LG, is going to heat up in mobile simple payment market. Samsung, which has entered the market before the other did, has been expanding by forming a partnership with city banks. On the other hand, LG is setting ‘White Card’ at the head.

Although it is uncertain that which side will conquer the market since detailed qualification of White Card has not yet been recognized, investigators and early adapters, who are pouring much attention on simple payment, are giving their own scenarios.

Comparing qualifications of the two products

Samsung Pay, briefly speaking, is a credit card on phone. It is accepted almost anywhere the users can swipe their credit cards. In addition, security systems such as fingerprint verification and onetime card are set.

To sign up on Samsung Pay, run Samsung Pay app and sign in. The account could be your cell number, email address, Google or Facebook account. After you sign in, you are asked to go through the registration procedure and the following is the step. Accept user agreement, register fingerprint, add card and enter card information, go through self-verification, and set payment PIN number. And now you are ready to launch Samsung Pay.

The major alliance brand includes the subsidiary restaurants, department stores, convenience stores and gas stations of Shinsegae. Alliance brands that include Kyobo Book Centre and Korean Airline are counted in total number of 69. It is known to some of the users that only Samsung cards could be registered. However, total 10 banks that include Shinhan, Kookmin, Hyundai, Lotte could be registered as well. Almost all of the functions of the original credit card, which include membership, transportation card and banking, are transferred.

LG has not yet introduced the qualification of White card. And it is expected that MWC would publicize their new model G5 only. The reason why they make separate card is to target the older generation that is not familiar with mobile payment.

Internet users expect LG’s White Card to be in the form of Brilliants. Brilliants card can register up to 30 cards and through separate display and button, the users can switch the card easily. And the service to connect with apps like the ‘Syrup Wallet’, which notifies the users where they can get the most discount or service at where they are will be offered.

What are the pros and cons of each

Samsung Pay users point out that fingerprint verification error occurs occasionally. Moreover, the payment can not be made when the cellphone is low on power.

Especially, since Samsung Pay app consumes too much power, it is expected that the use of auxiliary battery will increase. Also, since it is compatible only on the premium models such as Galaxy Note5, Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge, Galaxy S6 edge plus, it may work as a factor of a decrease of an access by the users who feel burden on purchasing smartphones. Nevertheless, this is not a big deal, as they will add more the compatible models.

The very flaw of White Card is that the users must carry the card with them. In addition, this card should be charged. Especially it is noted as a dilemma since the separate charger is required. However, LG is under examination of connecting the card to the G5’s modular battery. Or the possibility of the card being charged automatically in its exclusive case is brought up.

The encountered problem is ‘compatibility’

There are the problems that both Samsung Pay and LG White Card both have. The range where it can be used is not quite broad. Especially, there are the drivers who doubt the paying through smartphone when taking taxi. This is not the problem of fixing two services, but rather, increase the partnership between the affiliates is needed.

Samsung Pay seems to be more advantageous. It seems that the brand name ‘Samsung’ encounters virtually no problem to attract the affiliates. In fact, rumor has it that considerable number of city banks desire to join Samsung Pay.

However, LG’s response is not quite easy to deal with. IT industry, financial institutions and distribution industries have made preorders for White Card. The participation of financial corporation has followed one after the other and at this point of time, the end of January, Shinhan card and KB Kookmin card has joined. By March, Lotte card is planning to take part and Hyundai and BC card are under investigation of taking part in LG Pay.
