[Column] The 4th industrial revolution and presidential candidates’ pledges
As the term of the 4th industrial revolution has become the recent conversation topic among presidential candidates, they are competitively announcing a pledge to lead the revolution.
When looking into the content of the announcement, however, none of the presidential candidates seems to know the core of the 4th industrial revolution.
As the word of the 4th industrial revolution looks nice, they seem to try to preoccupy the term as if people assert that they are progressives under the thought that progressivism looks nicer than conservatism.
There is a rumor that the 4th industrial revolution was brought in vogue as a sales technique while being published as a book. As the home appliance company GE declared it for modernization of a manufacturing method, it became well-known to everybody. Also, it was widely known to people as the term was tabled as a major topic at Davos Forum.
I’d like to suggest my opinion over what is a desirable way in understanding the proposition of the 4th industrial revolution and what is the best way to apply the big proposition to our industry for development of the Korean economy and creation of the future growth engine.
Most people know that drone, robot, Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, artificial intelligence(AI) fields are the territory of the 4th industrial revolution, but they do not seem to know what the core is.
The core is sensor technology.
Mentioning the drone, robot and IoT fields in the 4th industrial revolution means that they know only the external part.
It is the same as the construction of a building without an interior work.
Recently, some people introduced drone or robot to the spot at an expensive cost, but all of them failed.
The reason is simple, drone or robot without a high-tech sensor is the same as moving into a house without an interior work.
What is the sensor?
The five senses of human beings –an eye to see, an ear to listen, a nose to smell, a tongue to taste and the sensory function to feel cold and hot - are human sensors possessed by them.
The 6th consciousness that goes beyond the five senses according to Buddhism or the Western philosophy, the 7thmanas-vijnanaor the 8th alaya-vijinana appearing in trainees of Buddhism also refer to the super sensor.
Considering that we can anticipate the future through the big data analytics by gathering numerous materials on social phenomena and anticipate diseases by analyzing many clinical data on changes of human body, the big data analytics can be regarded as the super sensor of the 7th manas-vijnana or the 8th alaya-vijinana in Buddism.
The smallest units of material – molecules, atoms, nucleus, protons and electrons, DNA information of living things and light and sound (frequency) of nature become core factors. By perceiving their minimal changes and differences, ultra-high performance sensors are developed.
Sensors used for natural science research are thermometer, pressure gauge, hygrometer, ruler to measure length, compass to inform direction, GPS, weather cock and altimeter.
Also ordinary microscope and electron microscope used for studying microscopic world, telescope or CCTV can be regarded as a sort of sensor.
Robot or drone is just an external shell.
When a super sensor is installed on them, high value added is created and the application fields become infinite.
There are several hundreds of super sensors, including super precision camera, superior performance sound sensor, distance and location measuring sensor through a satellite, sensor to perceive balance, sensor to perceive the minimum quantity of chemical material, sensor to detect heat, sensor to detect gas, sensor to detect motion, and night-vision sensor using infrared lays. Who will develop such super sensors more and faster? It will decide the success or failure of the 4th industrial revolution and the nation’s future.
In case of installing an ultra-high performance camera that can identify an ant on the ground at an altitude of 500 meters or 1 kilometers and a voice detection sensor that can hear and record conversation of people on the ground on a drone flying in the sky, its application fields will be infinite.
In case of the North Korea’s drone flying over the Military Demarcation Line in the night at a low-altitude flight, it is difficult to discern and perceive sound with human being’s eye.
However, if a robot equipped with such advanced sensors is installed on the front line, it can perceive the drone exactly at a long distance, take aim and shoot down it.
In case of installing 500 robots equipped with advanced high-performance sensors on the 155-mile, 248-kilometer sector of the Military Demarcation Line on the Korean Peninsula at intervals of 500 meters, we can have the iron barrel-like surveillance network covering the sky, not to mention the ground.
If a sound sensor that perceives voice in low tones from afront at the 1 kilometer-distance can distinguish whether or not it is the sound of wind, animal or human being through a big data analysis, and if a motion detection sensor that detects movement of a figure at a distance that cannot be seen by eye can distinguish whether it is an animal or human being, and discern shape and color of wearing clothes, there is no need to post sentries at the front.
Recently, U.S. President Donald Trump declared to set up a 3,144 kilometers-long border wall between the U.S. and Mexico. The cost for the wall construction reaches some 12 trillion won. If 6,000 robots equipped with advanced sensors are installed on the border, the astronomical construction cost will be reduced to less than 5 percent of the cost.
In addition, it won’t be long before a medical sensor that can distinguish the kind of over 20 cancers with just a single drop of blood or saliva of a human being will be developed.
Such sensors can distinguish the kind of cancer by differentiating the difference of chemical composition held by microscopic cancer cells, not to mention the simple difference of blood type.
Also if the sensor can distinguish the kind and location of a gas by detecting a tiny gas leakage, and detect an abrupt change of temperature, it will be possible to prevent fire of a large building.
Accordingly, such issues as fostering high-quality human resources to develop numerous super-high performance sensors, budget assistance and the setup of a general sensor development research centershould be solved in Korea.
In the future, Korea should be a top sensor development mecca, a department store equipped with various sensors, and an advanced country leading the 4th industrial revolution in the world.
A leader leading the country should design the nation’s future after exactly knowing the 4th industrial revolutionas the future growth engine industry, the new food industry and the high-quality youth job industry.
