Merck Korea (Managing Director: Glenn Young), a global science and technology company, will showcase its comprehensive portfolio at “International Meeting of Information Displays (IMID) 2017” to be held at COEX in Seoul, Korea on October 17-19 by presenting a wide range of future-oriented display materials. United by the slogan “Advanced Materials for Displays and Beyond“, Merck materials can be applied not only commercial displays such as TV, Monitor, smartphones but also new area such as automotive, antenna, lighting and architectural window. This year, Roman Maisch, Senior Vice President Marketing & Sales (M&S) of Display Materials, Merck KGaA, visits to join the tape cutting ceremony and cheeck latest display technology for next-generation through various Merck’s electronic materials.

Merck, seeking constant innovation, will showcase a future development strategy toward new application area. Advanced materials can contribute to make products beyond displays with various flexibility, robustness, free-form and lightweight enabling new user experiences and further design options.

Under the brand name licristal® Merck is cooperating closely with the industry to develop liquid crystals for the next generation displays. UB-FFS (Ultra Brightness Fringe Field Switching), it’s energy-saving ultra-brightness, supports the trend toward increasingly higher resolution in conjunction with optimized light transmission and optimized outdoor readability. Because it can make better use of backlighting, it allows slimmer displays. The SA-VA (Self Aligned Vertical Alignment) technology, currently under development process for displays. This reduces production costs while maintaining compatibility with the PS-VA (Polymer Sustained Vertical Alignment) process.

With licrivue®, Merck offers reactive mesogen mixture for 3D-FPR (3D Film-Patterned Retarders), which are used in 3D display. It can also be used for as IPS/FFS (In-Plane Switching/Fringe Field Switching) compensation films or AQWF (achromatic λ/4 films) with ND-RMM(Negative Dispersion RMM) to improve the properties of LC and OLED displays.

Merck‘s isiphor® brand offers energy-efficient, high-quality phosphors for LCD backlighting as well as for LED lighting applications. Merck’s new generation of LuAG(Lutetium Aluminium Garnet), they have improved, narrowband particle size distribution, which both decrease phosphor consumption and improves brightness (more lumens per watt). The quantum efficiency used as measured variable was increased by 4% to 98% from the first generation of lutetium garnets to the current third generation. A significant advantage for LED manufacturers is that they can produce more LEDs meeting the desired specification and thus boost their production yields.

Merck’s livilux® portfolio includes the latest small molecules for evaporation process on glass or flexible substrates, as well as soluble material systems for inkjet printing process, covering the full range of OLED application. Especially, Merck’s tailor-made, high-efficiency OLED materials give the freedom to design unique displays and lighting devices.

Merck’s quantum materials are nanosized semiconductor crystals that absorb incoming light of short wavelengths (usually deep blue) and emit colors at longer wavelengths (green and red) with very narrow bandwidths. The materials can be used in the backlight units of LC displays to increase light throughput, extend the color range, and provide stronger, more natural greens and reds. Merck has recently signed a license agreement with Nanoco to market and sell Cadmium-Free Quantum Dots, which are eco-friendly display materials. With cadmium-free QD, a remarkable increase in the color range and a significant reduction in power consumption can be achieved.

The energy-saving liquid crystal window (LCW) technology ensures that windows can be switched continuously from light to dark and vice versa in just seconds, thus controlling the amount of light and heat entering glass-enclosed rooms. In addition to the fast switching process, these windows feature a high level of color neutrality in comparison with competing technologies. This results in new prospects for the architectural design of windows and facades, and the LCW technology can also be used for sunroofs in cars. As a leading materials supplier, Merck is developing this technology, to be marketed under the licrivisionTM brand, together with partners from the glass, window and facade industry. The first pilot installation - with around 100 square meters of liquid crystal windows in the modular Innovation Center in Darmstadt - has attracted many visitors since mid-2015.

Merck’s Photoresists are light-sensitive organic compounds organic compounds used to form patterned coating on surface. For flat panel display manufacturing, our photoresists are specially designed to enable faster photospeed and wider process margin. They are also characterized by highly uniform coating quality on large glass substrates and optimal adhesion to various metal films and ITO. So photoresists are primarily tailored for the production of integrated circuits and flat panel display.

Merck’s Siloxanes are silicon-based polymers specially prepared for higher and lower temperature curing. The materials are optimized for the production of high optical transparency films with excellent thermal, chemical, electric insulation properties combined with high UV durability and low-k quality. Suitable for use as low-k dielectrics in advanced flat panels,

Barrier films made of Merck’s polysilazanes offer unparalleled protection from moisture and oxygen for a variety of components, such as OLED displays, organic photovoltaics, and quantum materials. The silicon-based materials can be wet-processed on plastic films, quickly transformed into very thin layers of high-quality barrier coating. Roll-to-Roll manufacturing can be applied. Silazanes offer the opportunity to substitute glass, and enable appealing form factors for flexible, lightweight and robust displays. The Merck booth is located at B02, Hall D(3F), COEX.
