Digital Age Galore
Amidst the loud noises and bustling crowds, the World IT Show 2010 had a lot to offer. From electronic shelf labels to NCCM programs to iPhone applications; it was certainly a 21st century digital age extravaganza which would remind one of the song 'Video Killed the Radio Star' by the British group The Buggles. Yes, video did kill the radio star but what the Buggles didn't know was that 3D Television would in turn kill the video star. This day, several distinct technologies were introduced to the large group of buyers, college students, professors and the average John Doe. One thing that World IT Show clearly stated is that the era of software and software open market has come. In the near future, more software exhibitions than hardware exhibitions are expected. Here, we introduce five new technology and products.
A famous catch phrase says, "In a world full of copycats, be an original." Buzzni has certainly proved itself to be an original by raising the bar in the field of search engines. When people search the internet for information on the latest iPhone, they normally get results about price, applications and a plethora of other incremental and factual information. One thing people wouldn't expect is for the search engine to measure the keyword by a meter that sways between the two words 'optimistic' and 'pessimistic.' Buzzni is an opinion search engine that was awarded first place at the National Institute of Standard and Technology, TREC 2008 Blog Track. To come in first place, Buzzni came in first place for Baseline Task, Opinion Finding Task, Polarity Task and Blog Distillation Task.
Buzzni first started by dividing text into fact and opinion. Most search engines focus on delivering facts. Buzzni is different in that it focuses on opinion rather than fact. In other words, Buzzni focuses on the opinionated voices of the population by searching through internet cafes, blogs, reviews, twitter and bulletin boards. In order to categorize the opinionated data, Buzzni uses a technique called 'Opinion Mining.' Opinion mining first stemmed from the curiosity of whether a computer can understand and quantify positive and negative expressions. Today, opinion mining helps categorize data by first selecting a subject like, 'design' and then quantifying the positive or negative remarks associated with the subject into a percentage meter.
The power of the opinionated search engine cannot be ignored. Some may ask why a search engine would go through the pains of searching what other people think about a certain topic. The answer is not far away at all. When people buy high involvement products like cars or cell phones, they normally rely on a combination of facts and opinion from others. The same applies to businesses. In the past, businesses had to do offline marketing research either themselves or through agencies. Buzzni is the solution to both problems for it allows individuals to find the mass opinion on products and helps businesses do marketing research themselves.
In addition to opinion mining, Buzzni provides a mobile movie review service for smartphones. This is different from the normal online moview reviews because it draws from a much larger pool of data. As mentioned above, because Buzzni draws information from blogs, internet cafes and bulletin boards, it provides an accurate presentation of what most people thought about the movie than a movie review website, which expresses the opinions of those few who go through the process of having to upload their reviews.
Buzzni also provides services for businesses called OpinionCube.net. This service helps companies figure out what the mass population thinks about their product and their competitors' products. For example, if a company were to go through all the opinionated data of Haptic, it would get 130,000 pages worth of information, which would take 4 to 6 years to change into information useable information. OpinionCube.net can reduce this time to 5 minutes. Considering that thousands of new information is uploaded online daily, OpinionCube.net will definitely be a necessity in the future.
Currently, due to the vast amount of information, Buzzni has opened its services to the public for search only related to cell phones, cars and movies. However, the service will eventually be open next year for all keywords. Buzzni also has plans on opening a Chinese-based website next year and an English-based website afterwards.
During the World IT Show 2010, not all the exhibitions were new gizmos and gadgets designed to put people in awe. At the event, CEST introduced two products that weren't designed to put people in awe but to certainly change and conquer. CEST is the world's best research institute in the embedded software technology market and each researcher at CEST has laid claim to more than one world-renowned intellectual property right. CEST's main goal is to develop new technologies and products for commercial purposes to boost the competitiveness of local businesses. Some of the two precuts CEST introduced at the WITS 2010 were the uTag-ESL and ZigBee PDA Mobile Plus-II.
The uTag-ESL is a ZigBee-based electronic shelf label system which provides various services including real-time updates, management, and advertising. Put it simple, uTag-ESL is a digitalized shelf price tag. CEST has replaced the paper tag that has to be replaced every time the price changes, with a digitalized tag with a monitor: a change that certainly has potential to conquer the way price tags are presented today. The uTag-ESL provides many benefits. It reduces the time and cost for the manual replacement of paper labels and also enhances work efficiency by saving labor hours that would have to be invested into changing the paper labels. The uTag-ESL also nearly eliminates customer claims that can be filed due to price discrepancies between paper labels and POS database. In addition, the uTag-ESL updates the product display easily through the mobility of electronic shelf labels and increases the efficiency of store management helping them understand product information. In other words, uTag-ESL provides much and promises much for retailers that are growing larger each year.
The second product that attracted much attention was the ZigBee PDA Mobile Plus-II. The Mobile Plus-II allows the use of various applications including wireless communications such as Bluetooth, WiFi, ZigBee, and RFID reader. The PDA can be used in many ways with just two things: the PDa and a ZigBee Tag. In a restaurant, an employee can receive order using the PDA through a ZigBee Tag. In a museum, tourists can receive information about the items on display using their PDA which receives information from a ZigBee Tag. The PDA can also be used for security purposes. All this can be done through the ZigBee PDA Mobile Plus-II.
CEST has plans on exporting their products, especially the uTag-ESL. Through a joint partnership with CAS, the manufacturer of scales, CEST will focus on advertising the uTag-ESL in Russia and Central America. The two goods that were on display by CEST aren't jaw dropping but they both possess the potential to change and conquer.
LogicVein stepped forward in the show to introduce what people, less the technical knowledge, may call a big 'do' and 'undo' button. LogicVein was first founded in 1992 Japan as the distributor of U.S. (United States) software. LogicVein has the Asian distribution rights of US software companies such as Castle Rock Computing's SNMPc. Starting from last year, LogicVein released its own invention into the Japanese market by the name of Net LineDancer: the two big buttons mentioned above. Net LineDancer is a, 'Network Configuration and Change Management' (NCCM) software which allows users to create a backup database of their device properties. Basically, the software saves each device's information which includes router, switch and firewall, etc. If a device needs to be replaced, the information can later be restored from the prior device in a matter of seconds, hence the big, 'do' button.
The software also performs changes on the network. An average company will have thousands of devices, each with a password. Companies normally follow a safety protocol of changing their passwords once every month. Using Net LineDancer, companies can now change their passwords all at once: another example of the big, 'do' button. This is a great revolution from the normal process of hiring five technicians for five full days to go through the tedious changing process manually.
On top of the network change function, Net LineDancer also does real-time change detection. Whenever a change to a device is made somewhere in the network, the software detects the change, performs a backup, and creates a history log. This history log is very important because it helps minimize human-error in the process of making change. Most errors that are committed in a business are human-errors. By keeping a history log, companies can now retrace their steps and fix the human-errors, hence giving life to the big, 'undo' button that now saves considerable amount of time and money for companies. The history log is Net LineDancer's ingenious step to minimizing human-error.
A competitor to LogicVein is HP Open View. Do not let the large name fool you, for some large companies like NTT Communications have switched to LogicVein's products. Using LogicVein's system, a company buying a network management server will spend an approximate $10,000 whilst a company using HP Open View will spend an approximate $200,000. Some new customers to LogicVein includes Toyota Motors, which uses Net LineDancer to manage its numerous companies around Asia.
LogicVein will release a Lite version of Net LineDancer for the traveling engineer's notebook who can go around the world but still have the whole world at his fingertips. LogicVein has high hopes for this year and plans on finishing strong by spilling its technical services to China next year. As President Sasaoka Takashi says, "Net LineDancer is a totally new concept in the network management field and I see it to be very promising in Korea and further on China and the rest of Asia."
Ablestor was also recognized at the World IT Show for its new technology. Ablestor is a network specialist company that introduce a NAS in Korea and research and develop related technology through partnership with Synology INC that is Global Network storage company. Synology have No.1 market share in SMB NAS. In Korea, many people think NAS as a huge backup storage over 1 rack, but Ablestor miniaturize it to 1~5 bay and allow SMB and personal user to approach it. Ablestor release new products-group every year. In 2010, DS710+(2bay+5bay), DS1010+(5bay+5bay), RS810+(Rack type, 4bay+4bay) is released. The special feature of these product is when 2, 4, 5 bays are at full capacity and you want to expand capacity, you can buy 4,5 bay expansion dummy bay s at half price and can expand capacity easily with the plug-and-use system.
Ablestor can link with iPhone and has a movie streaming technology that is not supported in other NAS. Bliss Software stood out in the vast hall as a young software company that takes the best advantage of today's open market structure and great hit of the Apple iPhone. Apple i-pad, iMac, Macbook, and iPhone- this booth surely seemed more likely an Apple Land-but the host of this land's story out-shined the Apples. During the college year, CEO John Kim and organizes a team to create a game called Eggfly. Soon after its release on App Store, the game hits number one record in free downloads chart. For a certified venture company that is only six months old, its achievements are remarkable.
Next to the two hit applications in a row, Bliss Software challenged themselves by making a scientific approach to its latest application, Lazy Diet. This application is based on the subliminal effect of sound. Simply by listening to your favorite music with Pure Sound in the background, messages are sent to your brain to make your body start to produce more energy and growth hormones, ensuring muscles build-up. As your body consumes energy to increase muscles, this application aids you to lose some calories without putting much of a physical effort. Pure Sound is mixed with the playlist so users enjoy their favorite music and take advantage of the app at the same time. 'Daily Tips' is an additional feature that works as a great trainer.
